How to convert MOV to MP3
- Choose the MP3 quality: 192 kbps suits most music and voice.
- Drop your MOV file onto the converter, or click to pick it from your device.
- Wait for the progress bar. Longer videos take a little longer.
- Listen to the result in the player and press Download MP3.
The converter also accepts MP4, M4V, WEBM, MKV and M4A files, so you can use it for any video you need the sound from.
What is a MOV file?
MOV is Apple's QuickTime video format. It is what iPhones, iPads and many cameras and screen recorders save by default. Inside a MOV there are usually two tracks: the picture, often in H.264 or HEVC, and the sound, usually in AAC. Converting MOV to MP3 means dropping the picture track and re-encoding the sound as MP3, the most widely supported audio format.
Why convert MOV to MP3
- Save a song idea: you recorded a melody or a rehearsal on your phone and only need the audio for your DAW or for bandmates.
- Interviews and voice notes: an MP3 is a fraction of the size of the video and plays in any podcast app or transcription tool.
- Compatibility: some players, cars and older Android phones handle MP3 more reliably than video files.
- Sharing: an MP3 is easy to email or send in a chat where large videos are rejected.
MP3 quality and file size
MP3 file size depends on the bitrate and the length, not on the size of the original video. One minute of audio is about 0.9 MB at 128 kbps, 1.4 MB at 192 kbps and 2.4 MB at 320 kbps. A 4 GB iPhone video of a ten-minute rehearsal becomes an MP3 of around 14 MB at 192 kbps.
Converting cannot add detail that was not in the original recording, so 320 kbps from a phone microphone sounds the same as 192 kbps. Use the higher setting when the source is a good recording of music.
How to convert MOV to MP3 on iPhone, Mac and Windows
This converter runs in Safari, Chrome, Edge and Firefox, so the steps are the same on every device. On an iPhone, the upload area opens your Photos library and Files; the MP3 is saved to Files in your Downloads folder. On a Mac or a Windows PC, drag the MOV from a folder straight onto the page. There is nothing to install.
Turn the audio into something new
Once you have the MP3, measure its tempo and key with the BPM & Key Finder, make a slowed and reverb version, or flip it with Reverse Audio. To put it back into a video with a picture, use Audio to Video. If it is your own song, AIMusicVideoGen turns it and one photo of the singer into a lip-synced music video cut to the beat.
